It's a mini portrait that can also be used as a holiday ornament. It can be displayed year-round by tucking the strings inside the canvas and setting it on a miniature easel.

At first, it was a little nerve wracking putting together this type of item because I've never tried painting or drawing in miniature before. I like my art to look a certain way and I wanted to make sure something that has my name on it is something I'm proud of. So after putting together a few, I realized it was a lot of fun and many of the same principles that I use with creating my larger pieces went into creating a miniature piece.

When I draw with colored pencil, I use heat to push the wax to bloom through the paper. In a way, I'm painting with the wax rather than drawing with it. It's very handy when I'm covering larger spaces, but I found out that it's also very helpful with covering small spaces.

On a sentimental note, I wanted to talk about why this product is important to me. When I was 8, a babysitter gave my family a Christmas ornament that she painted of my family's home. It's still one of the most precious things about the holidays that I love so much. Even 20+ years later the special value that the ornament has with my family still resonates in our hearts. Unfortunately my brother called "dibs" on the ornament and I will respect it because I know I have items from my family that he wanted. It actually makes me happier knowing it was just as special to him as it has always been to me.

My hope is to be able to provide that type of ornament for someone else. I love being able to provide custom gifts for people to give at the holidays and special occasions. Over the years of creating custom art, it has been a privilege to have a small part in someone's special event.

I have had people tell me that I price my work too low, but I've always felt that art should be affordable to everyone. I don't need much to live on and make me happy so I hope that I set prices that reflects to create the art and what I think could be affordable to the general public. So this is why the mini portraits/ornaments are priced at $20. I hate thinking the economy has left some people feeling like they couldn't give a unique gift for a special occasion. I'm hoping that pricing the miniature portraits at this price and inspire people to see that love comes deep in the heart. So, it's not that I value the miniature portraits less than my other work and that's why I'm setting them at a lower price. I value my all work very much and I'm very excited that something I'm proud to produce will be more accessible.

I'm so grateful that what I love to do is appreciated. I'm thankful that my work has made me happy along with those that have seen it. Thank you so much for being supportive of my work!

The miniature portraits come shipped with a decorative white box that's perfect for storage. The miniature easels do not come with the portrait, but can be added for $2 each.

New Contest!
I'm so excited about this! It's hard to pick favorites in the mediums that I use, but colored pencils certainly rank high on my list. They're very versatile to work with and I've created some pieces that have turned out very successful. In this post, I will show some of the techniques I used to create my portrait of Luigi.

So here it goes! First things first, get to know your colored pencil set. Currently, my main colored pencils set is Prismacolored Pencils. I also have Verithin Prismacolored Pencils to cover small spaces and a Prismacolored Art Stix set to cover large areas. So how do you get to know your prismacolor set? You simply use them all. Many artists make the mistake of assuming the pencils will produce the exact color that are marked on the pencils or on the pamphlet that comes with them. The pamphlet, or even the color of the wood covering pencil, is just a helpful guide. Using the pencil is the only way you will know what color it will produce. If you don't test out all your pencils, you probably will end up loosing only half of your set.

When I first purchased my set, I decided to make a chart listing all the colors. It's very helpful to have because if I see a color that I would work, I can go to the chart and see how it looks used lightly or when it's burnished. I also left room to write in pencils from other sets and additional Prismacolor pencils that might be added in the future. Notice that I have the pencil's color code on the chart as well, it's important that when you're sharpening the pencils to start on the side that's away from the color code so you can easily replace it later on.

(Click on the chart to see the photo full sized on my flickr page. If you like, you can also download this chart on Media Fire. I also have split up this chart into three pages: Page 1, Page 2, and Page 3.)

I also have this chart blank. I understand the convenience of a chart that's already filled out, however I would highly suggest that you take the time to get to know your pencils and fill out the chart yourself. Remember, colors can be interpreted differently from color monitors and printers.

(Click on the chart to see the full size photo on my flickr page. If you like you can download this on Media Fire. I also have this chart broken up into three pages as well: Page 1, Page 2, and Page 3.)

Another type of chart that I use is a Blending Chart.

This chart is helpful for finding a blended color that could work for your. On this chart, I designed it so the colors can be listed on the right. It's fun to play around with and see all the color combination that are possible. I like to apply the colors that are going across first, then the apply the vertical rows second. A blended color will be different if you lay a lighter color first to a darker color and vice versa. It's something to keep in mind while you're filling out the chart.

(Click on the image to see the full size on my flickr page. Well here's the next tip! If I'm working from a photo, like with Luigi's portrait pictured earlier, I like to adjust some things in Photoshop first. Just jumping in a putting the pencil to paper might hurt you in the long run. It's best to have a plan of action and to experiment with colors before starting the piece. It's helpful to take the reference photo and pixelate it first to find the colors that are in the portrait. To do this go to photoshop, select fliter, pixelate, and then mosaic.

I like to take strips of the paper that I plan to work on and create color swatches with blended colors. Then I place them next to the mosaic reference photo.

Hope you guys enjoy these tips! They feature my Panda QR code. All the cards I printed out I tested individually! Yes, that took a while, and printing them out wasn't that much of a hoot either, but I think it's worth the results!

I tested them with Redlaser, i-nigma, NeoReader and Optiscan on my iphone. RedLaser is so sensitive, to the point I was ready to rip my hair out when I was designing the codes. It's a very popular app so. I really wanted it to scan well. I'm really happy with the design, when the business card is in your hand, it scans it very nicely with Redlaser. Photos of QR codes on computer monitors seem to be tricky to scan with Redlaser. So I worked hard to make sure I was getting a scan of the photos of the business cards. I'm happy to report that all the other apps picked up the code very quickly regardless if it was a in my hand or a photo of the business card on the monitor.

I have been making them for some friends and people that I've known through business. It's a very fun challenge to work with the computer programs. It also makes me love my iphone even more :-) So if anyone wants a custom one, please send me an email (erica@ericavojnich.com)

I would like to give a thanks to Geek Craft for posting my QR codes! I know, it's been a while again.

Things have been busy, but hopefully I'm going to be blogging a bit more! (I sure hope I didn't jinx myself, this year has been hard enough!)

Anyway, I came on here to write about the QR codes that I made up. Some of you right now are probably wondering, "What the heck is a QR code?" Well, basically it's a funky bar code that someone can scan with a smart phone and it will link them onto a website or it will give some additional information on the product.

For example, say you're walking around Times Square and you see a QR code on a billboard. You can use an app on your smart phone and get information on the product. A lot of companies are now putting the QR codes on their business cards or in magazines. This way the person can just scan the card and go straight to the website. Some QR codes can even enter contact info into your phone when you scan them. Most the apps that I've seen, ask you if you want to be connected to the website before you're connected to it.

So what do they look like? They look usually like this:

After doing some research on QR codes, I decided to use my computer skills and I made my code (the one above) look like this:

I also made this one using the same code:

So how do you make the code? I used this website to make mine http://qrcode.kaywa.com/ and it was very easy. You just right click save and you post it or alter it in photoshop.

So which apps do you use? I have an iphone and used the apps RedLaser and i-nigma to look at QR codes and to test mine out.

Do you need to do anything else with the codes? Nope just treat it as a picture file and that's it. I like to tell people which apps to use so they can look at them. When you find them in public (they are popping up all over the place now, they're going in popularity a lot now) it's like finding a prize on a treasure hunt!

My "Mug Shots" entry for Canine Art Guild

The theme was "Mug Shots", it seems simple enough, but it left me stumped. What makes you remember a dogs face? I was considering drawing my own dogs, they certainly are my muses. Especially since they're always around when I'm working. If I'm having a hard time drawing a particular feature on a dog, they also work well as live models. However, I know I need to branch out and draw more breeds. So, I started thinking of breeds that lasting memories when I see them in public.

I started thinking about the two Pekingese dogs that must live somewhere near my house. I usually see them when I'm driving in my car and I must look silly when I slow down to pass them. They're little feet are barely visible under all the fur, they almost look like they're defying gravity as they move over the sidewalk. You can barely see their faces as well, the only thing really visible feature from my car is their little pink tongues hanging in the air. Simply put, seeing them always makes me smile and makes me happy to see my dogs when I come home.

So here is my entry, "This Is My Happy Face". I just loved this little guys expression. 11"x14" Pastel on Ampersand Pastelbord

Slick's Portrait

I decided to write a post as a follow up to my Valentine's Day Contest. It was a very hard choice! There were many moving stories, I actually lost sleep on who I should pick to be the winner. I decided to make Slick the winner because he inspired his owner to rescue more dogs and to become a dog handler. My dogs, Lorna and Stella, have always inspired me to help other animals, so I really was moved by Slick's story. Here is Slick's portrait 11"x14" Pastel on Velour.

Valentine's Day Contest!

Hi everyone,

I have a very special announcement to make for my website! This is typical for Stella. A lot of times it's not even an animal, it's leaf that floated by the window. However, this time, she was right on the money.

So, I logged off and went to go see what had her barking with such enthusiasm. It turned out to be a kitten! So my heart broke into a little pieces and I couldn't just sit and watch. I grabbed my coat and went out into the cold outdoors. The kitten responded to me and started to chirp. It was trying it's best to come up to me, but I could tell it was scared. So, I did what any animal lover would do and I made sure it was inside. So, I got out the havaheart trap and tuna fish.

So of course I fell in love with the kitten. This kitten is super sweet. Right now he's being kept separate from our other pets. I'm really happy that we are fostering him! He's such a sweet kitten and I'm really happy that we saved him. He's very underweight, so I don't thin he would have lived long outside. I let the dogs see him and so far they are getting along very well. We named him Logan. We're keeping our fingers crosses that he doesn't have FIV or Feline Leukemia, since that would make it hard to find him a home if we don't end up keeping him. Our vet wants to wait until the kitten is 6 months old to be sure the test results won't give false results. Our vet thinks he's around 2 months old. So I guess now we have 4 pets and 1 foster kitten! Our other pets are Simon a big red kitty, Lorna and Stella both tri color King Charles Cavalier Spaniels, and Sophie a standard grey chinchilla.

He's so sweet and affectionate. Take a look at the pictures I took of him. He even got in the Christmas spirit.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_vDNIpCQqjSU/TSOrKeexb7I/AAAAAAAAAG0/YT3k6UQzvas/s320/kitten.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5558474561574498226" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_vDNIpCQqjSU/TSOribESaVI/AAAAAAAAAG8/j-XKeb7OniA/s320/ChristmasKitten2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5558474972974967122" />

Christmas Kitty!

This is a portrait for my Aunt Joanne and my Uncle Tom! I would like to apologize for the long break. I had a neck injury from an accident and was in bad shape. There wasn't much that I could do that didn't result in pain. So under doctors orders, I need to take a break so I could get back in shape. Now I'm slowly getting back into things.

I do have many things to blog about! I won Best in Show in very tough international art competition! I also have been selling prints of my work and portions of the proceeds went to various organizations. So I have many things to be grateful for while I was going through this ordeal. The one thing I've learned is true, I'm even more grateful for my work. Even though I can't sit at the drafting table for a long periods of time, it's become even more rewarding for me now.

One thing that happened recently that I would share with everyone, I had the opportunity to meet one of my idols, Denis Leary! I have always loved his comedy and his spirit. I'm a fan of Rescue Me and The Ref is one of my favorite movies. Mostly, I love the support he has given to NYC Firefighters. So when I heard that he was going to be at a book signing promoting his new Book, I knew I had to be there!

I decided to take it a step further and I wanted to give him something, however I only had a day to do it (I heard about the book signing the day before). I knew he has a huge love for Irish Wolfhounds. At one point, he had five of them. Clancy, is the one that most of his fans know about. He was even on Rescue Me and featured in his Roast. Sadly, Clancy passed away while he was writing his last book. So I decided to draw a portrait of an Irish Wolfhound and hope that the coloring would be close to Clancy. There was a small picture on his website, but the footage from his Roast was very helpful. So I after 8 hours I was able to finish it and frame it. Thankfully, I had time to scan it too.

To say I was nervous is a huge understatement. I also was wearing heavy layers because I assumed we were going to be waiting outside (we live in NJ near NYC, it's very cold right now). We ended up being inside, so I was overheating. So being very hot and nervous wasn't a good combination for me! I was very happy that I didn't faint or do something that would have mortified me when I got the front of the line. When I got to meet him, I think I said something along the lines of "Hi Mr. Leary, I know how much you like Irish Wolfhounds, so I made this for you. I tried to find a picture of Clancy so I could get the coloring close to his." He said, "Oh Wow! Do I get to keep it? It looks very close to Clancy!" So hopefully he like it and wasn't just being nice to later put my work in the creepy stalker gift pile.

Anyway, he pose for a picture with us (that's my handsome hubby Marc, he's also a really big fan of his). I honestly could have cried I was so happy! It was a great day! (Told you I was overheating, look how pink our cheeks are in the picture!)

Intermission...

While I'm working on some new art, I thought I would post a video for your entertainment.

Here's one of my favorite videos, it's of my Mom and Dad's cat Valerie. It's also one of my favorites. It was one of my first pet portraits and I gave it to my Dad for Father's Day. I know I've changed my techniques since this portrait, but there's just something that I like about this one. I have the tendency to be a bit critical when I look at my older work, by this one gives me warm fuzzy feelings. Probably because I have such a soft spot for Valerie. Her little nickname is "Moo Moo." When she was a kitten she would walk around the house saying "Moo Moo!" it was just too precious! I think I should dig up her kitten pictures!

Mr. Fancypants' Portrait (with a tutorial)

Yes, that's his name and I love it! It's a wonderful archival and acid free paper. There are some issues with using velour paper, but I have some tips. With velour paper, erasing is out of the question. It's best to layout the drawing with a light layer of pastels and continue building the drawing. It's also possible to draw a sketch and then transfer the drawing onto the velour with carbon paper. Paint pigments also like to "dust off" velour paper. I don't like using fixative with my pastel pieces. I know this is a big debate among artists, but I'm not a big fan of fixative for pastels. To get around using fixative I use a brand of pastels called PanPastels for very large areas. This brand binds to paper very well, I highly recommend it.

Here are some progression photos of Mr. Fancypants' portrait. This tutorial is mostly going to show how I create detail in fur. Later, I will have a tutorial on eyes since it's such an important part of any portrait. I took these photos while my work was on the drafting table.

(Please click photos for a larger view.) At this stage, I've blocked the major areas with the PanPastels. I'm preparing to go into the areas where I know that fine detail will be important. I know the frame will be black and white, so I'm keeping those colors in mind while I'm working. The velour paper allows me to layer colors together. I know I want the background to have brown, grey and black shaded together.

At this stage I went back in with more brown colors in the background with the PanPastels. Then I started to go into the fine detail areas with Derwent pastel pencils. It's important to have sharp points on the pencils during this process. I like to use sandpaper to keep them sharp. I never use a pencil sharpener because the pencils are very fragile. It's important to pay attention to the direction of the fur while adding in the fine detail. I used Burnt Umber 54F, Brown Ochre 57 B, Sepia 53 F, Sepia 53 D, French Grey 70 D and French Grey 70H.

At this point, I know the final stages are near. I added in the color into the cheeks for the whiskers. I built up the background some more. I blended in some of the detail with a paper stump. I built up some of the color in the chest. In the final stages, I add shading in the inner ear, along with fur. Then I add in the whiskers with Chinese White 72 B and Ivory Black 67 B pastel pencils.

Hope this all was informative! I'm a big supporter of The National Zoo so I was very honored to help them. I wanted to draw two of their Western Lowland Gorillas, Mandara and Kibibi. During my last visit to the zoo, I was touched by Mandara's nurturing instincts. I wanted to capture the feelings of hope and love that I felt watching them.

I decided to title the piece, "Looking Forward". It's 11"x14" created with colored pencil on Somerset paper. I love working in colored pencil! The medium can be time consuming to work with, but the results are very rewarding. It seems that even grey tones can become vibrant with this medium. (Please click on image for a larger view.)

Zoofari 2010 will be on May 20th. Well, we now have a 4th pet! I do believe that we have a full house now!

Let me introduce you to Lorna Dune! My husband and I were considering changing her name, since all our other pets have "S" names, but we just love calling her "Little Lorna". Lorna is a rescue and a former breeding dog from a puppy mill. She has been doing so well in our home! Stella and Lorna are best buddies now.

I'm happy that they both enjoying sharing a big dog bed in my studio!

Introduction

Hello everyone! This is my first blog post! I guess it's about time to keep a regular update on things that are going on with my art. I have some events that are approaching that I'm looking forward to talking about them. I thought that this would be a great way to keep in touch with those that are interested in my work and share some of my ongoing projects. I'm also hoping to post my art in it's various progression stages and perhaps some tutorials.

First things first, I'm an artist that likes different mediums. I have a hard time picking out a favorite. I mainly work in pastels, colored pencils, graphite, and charcoal. I will be painting again soon, so that will be another to medium to add into the mix! I find a lot of inspiration for my work from nature. I love animals and have always found myself being pulled to have them in my work. I do create a lot of commissioned pieces for people of their beloved pets. Our pets are a strong part of our family, so it's an honor for me to be able to capture the love of someone's family.

I've been married for almost 5 year. My husband Marc is an accountant and we live in New Jersey. He's an amazing man and I love our life together. We have 3 pets in our household right now. The oldest is Sophie, she's an 11 year old chinchilla. I've had her since she was 4 months old. The next is Simon, he's a 4 year old Siberian kitty cat. Our baby is Stella, a 2 year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. They are usually keeping me company while I'm working in my studio.

Here is a portrait that I did a while ago of Stella. This was in honor of her first birthday.
